Christmas interior design ideas for classic british homes

Christmas is a wonderful time to lean into everything that makes a home feel warm, welcoming and timeless. For me, decorating for the season is less about trends and more about enhancing the character that’s already there.

Think of Christmas decor as an extension of your interiors. As an interior stylist I always approach Christmas decor as an extension of a homes existing style. In classic British interiors that often means layered textures, soft lighting and details that feel collected rather than brand new. Think wool throws, velvet cushions, aged brass ceramics and plenty of candlelight.

Layer seasonal colour into your existing scheme. Working with your existing colour palette makes all the difference. Neutrals, heritage greens, deep reds and inky blues work beautifully at Christmas and sit naturally within traditional homes.

Style the mantelpiece and dining table the traditional way. One of my favourite ways to decorate is using foliage from the garden. Sprigs of holly, ivy, bay or pine look effortlessly elegant draped along the mantelpiece or arranged loosely down the centre of the dining table. It’s simple, sustainable and brings a sense of the outdoors in. Paired with linen napkins, taper candles, a few subtle fairy lights and cherished objects, it creates a table that feels festive without the fuss.

Create a warm glow with layered lighting. Lighting is the key during the darker, winter months. Table lamps, fairy lights, and clusters of candles help create a cosy glow. I often suggest switching to warmer bulbs for the season, it instantly softens a space and makes everything feel more inviting.

Choose a Christmas tree that feels timeless. Whether you prefer a full traditional look or something more minimal, choose decorations that feel personal. A classic mix of baubles and ribbons, collected ornaments, handmade pieces or decorations with a story, add charm and personality.

Christmas interiors don’t need to be perfect. They should feel inviting, lived-in and joyful. A home dressed for the season should invite people to gather, linger and feel at ease. Slightly imperfect, beautifully layered and full of warmth.

Happy Decorating!
