Heatwave interiors: how to keep your home cool without sacrificing style
As much as we long for Summer sunshine in the UK, few of our homes are designed to cope with prolonged periods of heat. During a heatwave south facing rooms can quickly become uncomfortable, bedrooms feel stuffy at night and even the most beautiful interiors can lose their appeal.
The good news is that thoughtful choices in bedding, window treatments, fabrics and outdoor living can make a significant difference to comfort while maintaining a beautiful home.
Here are my ways to create a cooler, more comfortable interior during a British heatwave.
Switch to natural bedding.
One of the simplest changes you can make is to swap duvets and synthetic bedding for breathable natural fibres. Linen and cotton allow air to circulate, wick moisture away from the body and feel noticeably cooler against the skin. I’m a particular fan of Rebecca Udall’s elegant top sheets, which offer a wonderfully European approach to summer sleeping. Rather than sleeping beneath a duvet a beautifully made top sheet provides enough coverage without trapping heat.

For a classic British look Susie Watson’s bed linen combines timeless patterns with relaxed, natural fibres, creating bedrooms that feel both comfortable and effortlessly elegant. I particularly like her idea of a top sheet and a just a quilt/throw in summer.
Choose breathable linen curtains.
When selecting summer window treatments, fabric matters. Linen curtains are particularly effective because the feel light, airy and allow rooms to breathe while still offering privacy. Their relaxed texture also suits both country homes and tonwhouses beautifully. Soft neutral shades such as ivory, oatmeal and pale sage help reflect, rather than absorb, heat while maintaining a timeless aesethetic. I love Secret Linen store for these.
Layer Voiles and Blinds.
One of my favourite approaches is layering sheer voiles with blinds.
Voiles soften harsh sunlight, reduce glare and maintain privacy while allowing natural light to filter through the room. Combined with a blind behind them, they provide flexibility throughout the day.

Embrace Al Fresco Dining.
One of the joys of a British heatwave is the opportunity to move life outdoors. Rather than cooking indoors during the hottest part of the day, consider simple evening meals in the garden. A beautifully laid outdoor table instantly transforms an ordinary supper into an occasion. I particularly love a beautiful tablecloth. Molly Mahon has some fabulous block printed ones which bring colour and character to outdoor dining, while Susie Watson’s relaxed linens create a timeless English country garden feel. Just add garden flowers, wicker serving baskets and linen napkins.
Creating a home that feels comfortable, welcoming and beautifully layered is about far more than following trends. If you’d like help bringing colour, pattern and timeless British style into your home, I’d be delighted to hear from you.
