How to create a cosy living room with colour and texture

A cosy living room is one that feels warm, inviting and comfortable to spend time in. While layout and furniture are important, it is often the use of colour and texture that truly brings a space to life and gives it that sense of warmth.

One of the best places to start is with colour. Soft neutrals can create a calm foundation, but introducing warmer tones such as gentle ochres, muted reds, deep greens or rich browns can instantly make a room feel more intimate. These colours don’t need to dominate the space, even small touches through curtains, cushions or upholstery can add depth and character.

Layering is key to achieving a cosy atmosphere. Rather than relying on a single fabric or finish, combining different textures helps create a richer, more considered look. Linen, wool and velvet can work beautifully together, adding softness snd contrast. A well-placed rug, particularly in a traditional pattern, can help anchor the room while also introducing warmth underfoot.Curtains also play an important role. Full, well-fitted curtains not only frame a window but soften the overall feel of a room. In classic interiors, patterned or heavier fabrics can add both visual interest and a sense of comfort. If you have a bay window a combination of roman blinds and curtains also looks stunning.

Lighting should not be overlooked. A cosy room benefits from layered lighting, using a combination of table lamps, wall lights and floor lamps rather than relying on a single overhead light. This creates a softer, more atmospheric glow, particularly in the evenings. Portable lamps or rechargeable lamps are one of my favourites and they come in so many styles and colours it’s easy to add in texture or colour using them.

Finally, it is often the smaller details that complete the space. Books, artwork, ceramics and personal objects help a room feel lived in and welcoming. These finishing touches add personality and ensure the space feels truly individual.
