Every year, the announcement of a new colour of the year, get’s us talking about what we’re going to be painting our walls.
But I’m much more interested in a different question:
Could this colour work in our homes?
For 2027 Dulux has chosen Soulful Sage. It’s a soft, muted green with a gentle, almost silvery quality. And thankfully, it’s a colour I can see having a life beyond the trend pages.
A green that doesn’t shout
We’ve had many deep, dramatic greens over the last few years however Soulful Sage feels like a quieter evolution. It has enough colour to create atmosphere, but enough grey in it to sit comfortably alongside other colours and materials. That makes it particularly useful if , like me, you prefer a home that is layered rather than overly matched. I wouldn’t necessarily use it as a starting point for an entirely green room, instead think of it as one colour in a much bigger story.
How I’d use Soulful Sage.
In a living room, I love the idea of Soulful Sage walls with warm timber, aged brass and furniture that looks as though it has been collected rather than bought in one afternoon.
Then I’d introduce pattern. Perhaps a faded velvet armchair, a botanical pattern on the curtains or a floral lampshade. Add books, artwork and plenty of texture and suddenly the green feels much less like a trend colour and much more like the character of the room.
In the bedroom, Soulful Sage could be beautiful, particularly when used across walls and woodwork. Layer it with oatmeal, cream, muted pink and maybe some rust. Add a patterned headboard, antique bedside table and linen bedding that isn’t perfectly coordinated. The result should feel restful but not bland.
In the kitchen, if painting your walls isn’t for you then cabinetry could be the answer.
Soulful Sage would sit beautifully alongside warm white, natural timber, stone and aged brass. Rather than choosing a kitchen that looks as though it has just come out of a showroom, I’d soften it with with vintage furniture, artwork, textiles and perhaps an old wooden dresser.
You don’t have to like colour of the year, instead use these announcements as inspiration. Notice what colour you are drawn to. Think about how they make you feel and most importantly whether the colours work with the things you already love. If your home is full of antiques, artwork, pattern and pieces you’ve collected over many years, Soulful stage doesn’t need to take centre stage. It might simply be a colour that pulls everything together.
And that’s how I decorate. Not by starting with a blank room and filling it with things that match but by creating a layered, lived in interior, with colour, pattern and personality.
